Generosity supports SPiN work

The generous resources of our Oak Harbor community have yielded help for those in need during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Through the Evangelical Lutheran Churches in America Daily Bread Grant program, SPiN Cafe recently received nearly $3000 from members of our community and a $500 direct grant from the ELCA Hunger Program.

SPiN volunteer Paula Mihok keeps safe, and provides hand-sewn masks for our guests. Thank you Paula!

The ELCA grant was offered to help local congregations work with feeding ministries they support. SPiN worked through Oak Harbor Lutheran Church and received help in raising funds from many churches and groups in the community.

Meanwhile the Whidbey Community Foundation’s COVID-19 Community Resilience Fund Grant brought us an additional $2500. This fund was started by WCF in March, and, through the generosity and support of the Island community and beyond, WCF has raised over $160,000 for this Fund.

These funds will help us continue serving sack lunches, and extend the service days. It is our hope to soon be serving seven days a week.

Every dollar helps! If you’d like to help us continue this vital service, please go to SPiN’s Donation Page to contribute.

Thank you to ELCA, WCF, and so many members of our community who have shown your love and caring for your neighbors. You are actually saving lives.

More churches on board to provide SPiN sack meals

SPiN Cafe is overjoyed to announce that Living Word Church of Oak Harbor has chosen to team with us in our sack meal program. Thanks to Living Word’s support and partnership, we will now be able to add Mondays to our meal service at Flintstone Park.

In addition, strong networking among our local faith community has brought enough support from members of Oak Harbor Presbyterian Church to cover meals on alternating Fridays.

SPiN Board member Tom Saunders serves a hungry guest, with proper social distancing.

This makes 4 days a week, plus every other Friday, that meals will be provided to those most vulnerable in our community! This fabulous news represents a wonderful and valuable addition to SPiN Cafe’s efforts alongside the three churches already committed to the program: St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, Church on the Rock, and Christian Reformed Church.

Serving on these additional days shortens the gap in our meal program, in which our vulnerable neighbors have, until now, struggled to find a meal between  Thursdays and Tuesdays. We continue to serve nearly two dozen people at 12:30PM in front of Flintstone Park on Bayshore Drive.

With onoing  support from our citizens, in particular our wonderful faith community in Oak Harbor, we look forward to the ability to extend meal service to seven days a week. Thank you all for your donations, your prayers, and your tireless devotion to SPiN’s mission!

Support SPiN’s efforts financially and donate today. Thank you!

Thank you bayleaf for your support

SPiN Cafe would like to recognize the generosity and support from bayleaf in lovely Coupeville for providing sandwiches for delivery to those in need from our community. It is comforting, even as they too struggle to pay their own bills in these strange and confusing times, to have our local businesses step up to the challenge of feeding the most vulnerable among us.

We welcome anyone else who would like to donate to this worthy cause!

SPiN Cafe sack meals available now

To our guests and valued supporters,

Thanks to the warm generosity of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church and the Church on the Rock, SPiN has been serving dinners three days a week, since this past December, at their locations.

Beginning this week, as a precautionary measure to limit the spread of the coronavirus COVID-19, those buildings are unavailable to us. We will make an announcement as soon as the threat of exposure is eliminated and the churches have reopened.

Meanwhile, the good news: sack meals will be available!
